Timeline of Star Trek: Rebellion

2364
Captain Jean-Luc Picard takes command of the USS Enterprise-D, a Galaxy class starship.

2366
The Cardassian-Federation war finally ended when an uneasy truce was reached. The armistice that ended the conflict was negotiated over a period of three years by Admiral Alynna Nechayev, with Starfleet Captain Edward Jellico playing a large part in the negotiations. An item of note regarding the treaty is that Ambassador Spock openly disagreed with his father, the legendary Ambassador Sarek, over the outcome of the armistice. Border disputes would not be settled until the Federation-Cardassian Treaty in 2370.

2367
Gowron is confirmed as leader of the Klingon High Council. The Klingon civil war begins when the Duras family challenges Gowron. Lt Worf resigns his Starfleet commission in order to join Gowron's side in the war.

2368
After discovering that the Romulans are assisting the Duras family, Starfleet sends a fleet to the Romulan-Klingon border. The fleet is successful in preventing Romulan border crossings. Gowron's forces defeat the Duras family, although the sisters Lursa and B'Etor escape. The Klingon civil war ends and Worf returns to Starfleet service.

2369
The Cardassians retreated from the Bajoran system, abandoning the Terok Nor ore processing facility in orbit of the planet. The Bajoran Provisional Government asked Starfleet to take over the running of the station. Starfleet sent Commander Selena Ruhl to run the station. Chief O'Brien transferred from the USS Enterprise to become the station's Chief Engineer. In accordance with Starfleet naming conventions, the station was named Deep Space Nine.

2370
The Federation-Cardassian Treaty established the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) as a buffer between the newly re-drawn Federation and Cardassian borders. Neither the Federation nor the Cardassians were allowed to place Military Outposts in the region, nor were they allowed to conduct fleet exercises or station warships anywhere in the DMZ. The Treaty ceded several dozen Federation colonies to the Cardassians, forcing the colonists (many of whom had been there for ten generations) to either voluntarily relocate, or forfeit their Federation Citizenship to remain in their homes under Cardassian rule.

Feeling abandoned by the Federation, a number of the colonists formed a guerrilla force to protect their homes from the Cardassians, who frequently attacked them in violation of the Treaty without any serious consequences. The guerrilla force called themselves the Maquis, after the secret army of patriots in France during the German occupation in 1940-1944. The colonists were joined by Starfleet Maquis sympathisers, former Bajoran freedom fighters, and disenchanted individuals from all walks of life who either had personal grudges against the Cardassians, or simply were looking for a fight.

The Maquis were initially organised in a series of cells, with only the leader of each cell knowing the whereabouts of the other cells. They hid in the Badlands, a region of space near the Cardassian border populated by dangerous Plasma Storms, much as their 20th century counterparts had hidden in the thickets from which they derived their name. The Badlands had been used by the Bajoran Resistance for the same purpose during the Cardassian occupation.

2371
The Amagosa star system was destroyed by Dr. Tolian Soran. The Enterprise-D was destroyed by the sisters Lursa and B'Etor whilst attempting to prevent Dr. Soran from similarly destroying the Veridian system. The sisters were killed in the conflict. Picard and his crew were given a new Galaxy class ship which became the new flagship and was named Enterprise-E.

The Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) is put into service on the Enterprise-E. Successful trials see it installed on all newly built ships.

2372
The Maquis saw the Federation as willingly sacrificing their colonists in an effort to maintain a peace that should never have been negotiated.

This point was brought home all too clearly when the Cardassians declared war on the Maquis.. However, even with the Cardassians openly attacking colonies that were occupied by Federation citizens, the Federation refused to change their policies regarding the Maquis. While the Bajoran freedom fighters had been lauded for driving the Cardassian occupation from their homeworld, the Maquis were condemned as terrorists and treated completely without mercy.

More and more officers were withdrawing from Starfleet and joining the Maquis, showing their contempt for Federation policy. Starfleet in particular saw their officers joining the Maquis as a personal betrayal. Eventually, the Maquis were declared to have forfeited their citizenship in the Federation.

2373
It was at this point that a Nebula-class ship ceded from the Federation and openly joined the Maquis, lending its support against the Cardassians in defiance of the Cardassian-Federation Treaty of 2370. This was the first capital ship of Starfleet's to join the Maquis, and prompted a public outcry as to why valuable and trusted Starfleet officers and their ships were rejecting Federation policy and joining the Maquis. The ship was instrumental in helping defend a colony from Cardassian attack. As a result of this, over the next year nearly a hundred of Starfleet's ships and crews joined the Maquis, and many battles were engaged between Cardassian and ex-Starfleet ships.

Cardassia accused the Federation of secretly trying to break the treaty, and threatened to go to war against the Federation again. In a knee-jerk reaction to this, the Federation declared the Maquis an enemy of the Federation, and were to be hunted down and destroyed. This provoked another major outcry, including within Starfleet itself, as many of those who had gone to the Maquis had been trusted friends and colleagues of those who remained in Starfleet, not to mention the friends and families of the civilians.

Public pressure was put upon the Federation President to accept the overwhelming evidence of Cardassian atrocities against Federation citizens, and their outright disregard for the conditions of the treaty. However, when the President attempted to bring about the cancellation of the Cardassian-Federation treaty, there was a coup amongst the high-ranking officers of Starfleet Command. Many of them believed that the Maquis were criminals and terrorists, and that succumbing to their demands was nothing less than agreeing to the demands of terrorists.

The President was forced to flee for his life, along with those within Starfleet Command who were loyal to him. When Federation marines stormed the President's home, he was beamed away just in time by Captain Picard, who had learned of the coup attempt. Picard had been one of those most vocal for a peaceful resolution to this problem, but when he learned of the coup and its' far-reaching support, he decided he had to act. He was unable to stand by and let the short-sighted few kill the President and destroy the foundations of what he believed the United Federation of Planets stood for. With the President safely on board the USS Enterprise-E, Picard and another two dozen major ships also ceded from the Federation and joined the Maquis.

At this point it became absolutely obvious that the Federation was in the midst of a civil war.

Without a President, the Federation was declared to be under martial law, and Starfleet Command became a dictatorship responsible for the continuation of the Federation.

Immediately after this, Vulcan dropped out of Federation membership, declaring itself neutral in this civil war. The Klingon Empire also declared itself neutral, but Captain Picard and Lt Commander Worf were instrumental in quickly gaining the Klingon's alliance. With the Klingons allied with the Maquis, Starfleet found itself evenly matched. Few ships remained in the Federation that weren't loyal to the Federation's policy of retaining its treaty with the Cardassians, and declaring all Maquis members as terrorists.

With Bajor already having experience fighting the Cardassians, they initiated offers to the Maquis and the Federation's ex-President to allow them the use of Bajor as a centre of operations. Deep Space Nine was taken over by the Bajorans and then handed over to the Maquis. The deposed Federation complement joined the Maquis, and Chief O'Brien served again on the USS Enterprise-E.

Without openly declaring war on the Federation, the Klingons had managed to force a supply line between the Klingon Empire and Bajor, and together, the Maquis and the Klingons managed to hold and reinforce this line. With Klingon assistance, Deep Space Nine was rebuilt and enhanced, becoming a huge battle station which also housed the Maquis' first shipyard. Using a combination of Federation and Klingon technology, new ships were built and enhanced cloaking devices were installed on most ships. DS9 became the centre of Maquis leadership.

Ex-Starfleet Admirals became the President's new 'Maquis Command', similar to Starfleet Command, but with the purpose of creating a new power structure with which to compete with the Federation. The ultimate goal was to eventually return to Earth as the dominant power, and return the Federation to the stable organization it once was. It was obvious that this could not be done peacefully any more. Vice Admiral Grace Merrick became the Maquis Fleet Admiral.

Over the next 2 years, the Klingon supply line became the focus of many minor battles between the Federation and Klingon-Maquis forces, with the Federation eventually ceding it as lost territory in 2375. Once the Federation completely pulled out of the territory between this line and the Cardassian DMZ, the territory became 'No Man's Land'. It was quickly claimed by the Maquis who began their own patrols of the area in an attempt to keep the Cardassians out of it.

2375
Now with nearly 300 ships in its fleet, the Maquis had become a sizeable force. The Federation was unable to justify sending a superior fleet against them, as public opinion didn't allow it. The dictatorship that the Federation had become was still in the process of thinking public opinion was important. A truce of non-aggression was established, but this lasted just over a year before the Federation began testing the strength of the Maquis, and minor skirmishes were reported.

2376
When it became public knowledge that the Federation had been campaigning for Romulus to join them, Romulus declared itself completely neutral in the civil war. There was also evidence that Ambassador Spock was succeeding in his attempts at reunification, as a Vulcan embassy was built on Romulus, with Ambassador Spock in residence.

2378
Since most of the officers who supported the high standards of what the Federation used to be had gone over to the Maquis, those that remained found that they pretty much had free reign to lead their crews as they saw fit. The rigid discipline of Starfleet had shattered, and what was left of the Federation's Starfleet Command was filled with those who believed that 'might makes right'. This policy drifted down through the ranks and the ships, and the commanding officers found that it was easier to get things done through fear. Some crews began to mutiny, but only a few succeeded in their attempts and joining the Maquis. The rest who failed were forced into the 'new way of doing things'. Many were executed.

Being allied to the Klingons allowed the Maquis more freedom than they had expected. Federation attacks against them had lessened, and DS9 was used to build more ships and increase their defences. They had been fighting vicious battles against the Cardassians, who backed off when the Klingons sent three battle fleets to help stabilise the region. The Klingons had become a deciding influence in this sector of space, and were providing the Maquis the time and space they needed to establish themselves as a new political and military power.

As thanks to the Klingons for their assistance in helping the President and the Maquis, it was decided that Deep Space Nine would be given a Klingon name, and a Klingon honour guard was requested to guard the station. For the new name, the Klingon High Council reminded Captain Picard what had been said to him by the Klingon negotiator, after Picard had successfully brought them into the alliance with the Maquis. The negotiator had said, "You are a house of fire, we will help you save your house." He was referring to a famous Klingon Opera called the House of Fire. The Klingons requested that the new name of Deep Space Nine be "Qul Tuq," which is Klingon for House of Fire. When the Maquis agreed, the Klingons permanently stationed a small fleet of elite ships at DS9. Lt Commander Worf was promoted to Captain and was given command of this fleet, also at the request of the Klingons.

2379
Qul Tuq built the first of a new class of ship, the Sovereign class. This was to be the Federation's planned replacement for the Galaxy class, but when a quarter of the Federation's R&D team joined the Maquis, they destroyed the Federation's half-built Sovereign class ship, and brought all the plans of the Sovereign class with them. This was a devastating blow against the Federation's starship program. When the Maquis realized what this R&D coup would do for them, they focused all their resources on building this ship. After only 6 months, it was finished. Built also with an advanced cloak, it was one of the most dangerous ships in the quadrant. The Federation had lost the advantage that they were planning on.

Captain Picard was promoted to Admiral and given this new ship, which was named the USS Sovereign, while the Enterprise-E was given to Commander Riker, who was promoted to Captain. Picard's first mission in his new ship established a diplomatic relationship with Romulus, with the assistance of Ambassador Spock. When the Federation then accused Romulus of siding with the Maquis, the Romulans offered diplomatic overtures to the Federation as well, which were rejected. Vulcan, seeing Romulus willing to be friendly in their dealings with the Maquis and offering displays of friendship also to the Federation, invited Romulan ambassadors to Vulcan. It was accepted and for the first time in history, Romulus and Vulcan established diplomatic relations.

2380
Continuing skirmishes between the Federation and the Maquis had given the Federation something to fear, as it seemed that the use of advanced cloaking devices by the Maquis and Klingons greatly influenced the outcome of the battles in favour of the Maquis.

In a number of knee-jerk reactions, the Federation scrambled to develop their own cloaking technology, as well as finally declaring all-out war on the Klingons. The Klingon diplomatic staff on Earth were imprisoned. Vulcan removed their diplomatic staff from Earth, protesting at the Federation's actions. Betazed and Trill joined Vulcan in their protest, and they withdrew from the Federation as well. There were reports that Cardassian 'advisors' were helping the Federation perfect their military policies, and that they helped inspire the Federation's use of torture and executions as standard procedure during interrogations of prisoners. It was learned that the Klingon diplomatic staff held as prisoners of war were all executed by the Cardassian advisors on Earth.

The Klingons vowed revenge on the Federation and Cardassians, and publicly cemented their alliance with the Maquis, whom it considered the 'New Federation'. It urged other major races to join the alliance against the Federation.

Those races who had been observing the civil war realized that the Federation was becoming the exact opposite of what it used to be. The Maquis had become the new guiding light of the sector, and in recognition of their political and military power, diplomatic overtures were extended to them by Betazed and Trill. Vulcan and Romulus remained neutral. The name 'New Federation' was accepted and used by Betazed, Trill and Vulcan, as well as some other minor races, but Maquis Command chose to retain their 'Maquis' name amongst themselves, in defiance of the Federation. Of course, the Federation continued to q call them the Maquis as well, branding them as the greatest enemy that the Federation had seen so far.

During a battle in No Man's Land, the Enterprise-E was destroyed. It was an ambush by the Federation, which saw 12 capital ships to one, and 7 of them were destroyed before the Enterprise succumbed to a warp core breach. All crew were lost, including Captain William Riker. This only strengthened the resolve of the Maquis.

The Maquis now had two Sovereign class ships in service, and were building more Akira class ships to round out their fleets, all of them cloaked. The second Sovereign class was named the USS Enterprise-F and Admiral Picard transferred to command that ship. Commander Data was given the USS Sovereign.

2381
As a response to the Klingons having vowed revenge upon the Federation-Cardassian alliance, the Breen offered an alliance with the Federation, which was quickly accepted. The Breen immediately sent a fleet of warships to No Man's Land to help the Federation engage the Maquis in the biggest battle the civil war had seen so far, but the allied Federation/Breen ships were almost decimated by the combined strength of the Maquis and Klingon ships. The Cardassians remained out of the battle.

A total of 174 Federation ships were lost out of 190, along with 149 out of 163 Breen ships. The Maquis lost only 46 ships out of 265, while the Klingons lost nearly 100 out of 180. The Breen's new energy-dampening weapon proved ineffective after the Maquis created adequate defences against it, and the two Sovereign-class ships proved devastating against the Federation's and the Breen's older ships.

Realizing that everyone had underestimated the strength and determination of the Maquis, the Breen withdrew to lick their wounds, but maintained their commitment to their alliance with the Federation by sending a small fleet to Earth. This fleet joined with a Cardassian fleet, and became central to Earth's defensive strategies. The Cardassian-Federation Treaty of 2370 was declared ended, and the Cardassian-Federation Alliance of 2381 was announced. Further civilian dissent on Earth about the alliance, and having the Breen and Cardassians on the planet, was squashed by Federation Marines.

The Federation realized that it needed to focus on developing military and starship technology in an attempt to compensate for the massive loss it had suffered in the 'Battle of No Man's Land'. Other colony worlds tried registering their continued disapproval of the Federation's action, but they were also suppressed through violent marine action. Martial law was enhanced, and the Federation began to create isolationist policies.

The USS Tornado-A, a ship from an alternate universe, was destroyed on a mission to rescue Captain William Riker, who had been discovered to be alive and in Federation custody. The mission was a failure. The USS Talon, a Defiant-class ship from the same from the Tornado's universe, was too late to rescue them, but was able to pick up the survivors.

The USS Scorpion, a Sovereign-class ship, was launched. Command was given to Captain Aldous who was from the alternate quantum universe.

Recent History

January 2382
The Alliance launches the USS Atlanta, a Steamrunner class vessel. Command is given to a joined Trill, Captain Jennifer Hailey.

A rebel Romulan movement allied with the Cardassians and provided cloaking technology.  The Romulans deny official involvement and issue a warning to Cardassia.  Two Romulan senate members were arrested for rebel involvement.

March 2382
The recently launched USS Zion, a Sovereign Class vessel commanded by Captain Ian Hunter, cuts short its shakedown mission to investigate the destruction of the USS Kittyhawk.

April 2382
Federation "brain-drain" problems continue as more scientist defect to the Alliance. The Federation's efforts to stop the refugees was thwarted by the Zion and the Atlanta. Refugees seeking asylum were taken to Qul Tuq. Amoung them was one of the Federation's top quantum physists and weapons scientist, Dr. Paul Sparrow.

May 2382
Thelek Uvar becomes Commander of Qul Tuq station. It is believed that the Federation and Cardassian Union were behind the bold assassination of Shar Bensu, a diplomat who defected with top secret plans for a new Cardassian weapon. The assassination took place during what was to be a peace conference initiative.

The USS Zion, with the help of a rag-tag fleet of Klingon warships, intercepts a Federation Armada heading to Pacifica. The invasion is thwarted.

August 2382
Gowron, the Chancellor of the Klingon High Council is killed. His death was the result of a confrontation between himself and Worf following Gowron's treasonous dealings with the Breen.

What's different in this universe?

- Q is not active in this universe. Therefore...
- The Enterprise-D was not thrown into Borg space, and therefore...
- The Borg have not investigated our quadrant, and therefore...
- Benjamin Sisko is still serving on his ship in the Federation and had never been assigned to Deep Space Nine, and therefore...
- The wormhole at Bajor has not been discovered, and therefore...
- There has been no contact with the Dominion, and therefore...
- There has been no Dominion War.

The Maquis have become a power in their own right, therefore USS Voyager never went into the Badlands to follow the Maquis ship.

Because the Borg and the Dominion have never challenged the Federation, starship design has remained relatively stagnant. There has been no development of Defiant-class ships (which were designed to combat Borg). There is no Intrepid class (USS Voyager). The Akira and the Sovereign class is the only new classes of ship to have been built since the Nebula class. While the Maquis has both the Sovereign and Akira classes, the Federation is desperately trying to catch up with only the Akira class being their latest ship.

Star Trek: Generations happened, but the Sovereign-class wasn't developed at that time, so Picard was given another Galaxy-class
Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection never happened.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine never happened, neither did Star Trek: Voyager.

- Added the loss of the USS Enterprise-E and Riker's death. Admiral Picard transferred to a new USS Enterprise-F and Commander Data was given command of the USS Sovereign.
- Minor grammatical changes.

Changes for version 2.21
- Added Admiral Grace Merrick joining the Maquis.

Changes for version 2.2:
- Deep Space Nine was not a result of Commander Benjamin Sisko's assignment there, but was instead a result of the Cardassian occupation ending and the Bajorans inviting Starfleet to run the station. Therefore I've continued with the pretext that because Sisko hadn't been assigned there, the wormhole remains undiscovered. Because of the nature of the Bajorans and the Maquis, I felt it only logical that they would take control of DS9 from the Federation and offer it to the Maquis.

- Adjustments to the years that non-canon events took place.

- This latest version of the timeline turns the Federation into a much darker entity, of a nature similar to evil. They're allied with the Cardassians and the Breen, and are heavily influenced by them. The Federation's fear of the Maquis strength, and the loss of their powerful allies and the resources they bring (eg. Vulcan, Betazed and Trill), creates only more fear and despair within the Federation, and a greater desire to rely heavily on its allies the Cardassians and the Breen.

- Because of the vague similarities to the story of 'Star Wars', I have played with a probable conclusion of the Maquis strength and goals gaining them the title of the 'Alliance'.
